On this day in history The Soviet Union initiated the “Space Age” with its launch of Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite. The spacecraft was named after the Russian word for “satellite,” Sputnik. As an IT firm our interest lies with ever-changing and evolving technological advances. The release of this satellite was the first steps mankind made in the direction of connecting with outer space, this was a revolutionary launch that began the era known as the Space Age. Sputnik was visible with binoculars before sunrise or after sunset, it had the ability to transmit radio signals back to Earth strong enough to be picked up by amateur radio operators. Those in the United States with access to specific equipment had the ability to tune in and listen in awe as the beeping Soviet spacecraft passed over America several times a day.
